Taib urges Sarawak developers to be more environmentally friendly

KUCHING, July 8- Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud called on housing developers with sufficient resources to develop more environmentally friendly housing estates based on the Green Building Index (GBI) and Green Township criteria.

He said the developers should also provide amenities for the elderly and those with special needs in their projects.

taib“The objective of housing development should be to enhance the residents’ well-being and to sustain community-based living for current and future generations,” he said at the Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (SHEDA) Annual Dinner and Excellence Awards 2013 here last night.

His speech was delivered by the State Housing Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He listed factors such as open spaces, green living, sporting and recreational facilities as key components which would make a holistic housing development which was attuned to the customers’ needs.

“Our local developers must be willing to learn from the world’s best practices, share knowledge, undertake research and development and be constantly tuned into market signals,” he said.

Taib said the state government had always viewed SHEDA as a vital partner in the housing development.

“The business links and partnerships among SHEDA members and their business associates have contributed to a large extent towards the enhancement of the property industry through new and innovative products and services, ” he added.
