KUALA BESUT, July 10 – PAS has named Endot@Azlan Yusof (photo), a class A contractor, as the party’s candidate for the by-election for the Kuala Besut state seat.
Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, in making the announcement at a function here late last night, said Azlan, 48, was chosen as he fulfilled the criteria, including being a party loyalist.
He said that Azlan, who is the Besut PAS treasurer and better known as Che Long, was most popular with the local residents.
Azlan is expected to face a tough fight against the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, 37, who is a principal assistant director of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).
Also present at the function were PAS election director Datuk Husam Musa; Kuala Besut by-election director Satiful Bahri Mamat; vice-president Mohammad Sabu; Terengganu PAS commissioner, Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut; PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapa Ali.
Azlan, a local resident of Kampung Baru, here who joined PAS in 1997, told reporters that he would carry out cvhanges in the constituency if he was given the opportunity.
The by-election for the Kuala Besut state seat is being held following the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Dr A Rahman Mokhtar from BN on June 26 due to lung infection.
In the 13th general election on May 5, Dr Rahman defeated the PAS candidate, Napisah Ismail with a 2,434-vote majority.
