KUALA LUMPUR, July 16- “We have apologised via YouTube and we are sincere…we regret our action.”

Those were the words of the couple who were deemed to have insulted Muslims and ridiculed the holy fasting month of Ramadan on Facebook after a nearly 12-hour drilling at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) office where their statements were recorded to assist investigations.

As they stepped out of the office at 9.30 pm, the couple were immediately surrounded by a throng of reporters.

The two individuals came to the enforcement office of the MCMC here at 10.45 am.

They had allegedly uploaded onto their Facebook account a picture of them having the “Bak Kut Teh” pork dish with a caption touching on the sensitivities of Muslims last Friday.

MCMC head of enforcement and industry surveillance Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin told reporters at his office earlier that an investigation would be conducted and a report submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari was also reported as saying that the two individuals could be prosecuted in accordance with Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for displaying offensive pictures and words.

The offence was punishable with a fine of up to RM50,000 or a one-year prison term, or both, upon conviction.
