KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 – All is not lost for students who failed to secure places in public universities.

The Cabinet is to discuss the issue this week and find ways to help these students, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I know some were disappointed to not get place at uni (university), but don’t give up. Will discuss at Cabinet this week how to best help these students,” he said in a tweet Tuesday.

Yesterday, Deputy Education Minister II P. Kamalanathan said more than 18,000 students failed to get places in public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) although they had met the requirements, and urged them to appeal by Sunday.

Some 68,702 applied for first degree courses in the 2013/2014 academic session, but only 41,573 candidates gained admission to IPTA, the Higher Education Department announced last Thursday.
