zahid-hamidiPUTRAJAYA, July 24- More than 55,000 children who are 12-years-old have yet to apply for Mykad, according to statistics as of June 19, 2013 said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid said the main contributing factor for the high number of such cases was due to care-less attitude of parents, financial, those living in rural areas and remote interiors.

ic“Overall, Sabah registered the highest number with 8,259, mostly from remote areas. Therefore, the National Registration Department (NRD) has initiated the My12 programme to create awareness on the importance of the MyKad,” he said after breaking fast with NRD staff, here, Tuesday.

He said briefing sessions would be held in schools and registration done through the Mobile JPN 1Malaysia service and Mykad Mobile Unit.

Ahmad Zahid said the NRD would also initiate the My18 programme to encourage those who have reached the age of 18-25, to replace their Mykad as their physical appearance would have changed by then.
