RAUB, July 24- The Youth and Sports Ministry is to alter the approach and content of its programmes to draw the participation of more non-Malay youths, Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said yesterday.

Interview session with Khairy Jamaluddin on his thoughts on young people in politics. IZZRAFIQ ALIAS / The Star.He said many of the ministry’s programmes did not seem to interest Chinese and Indian youths for some reason.

“This is the challenge for us at the ministry. The existing youth programmes only draw the participation of Malay youths. We want to step up the participation of Chinese, Indian and other youths who are yet to be compatible with the government programmes.

“They find our programmes unattractive. Therefore, we will improve on our existing programmes and alter their perception,” he told reporters after closing the open day of Sekolah Kebangsaan Satak, here.

Khairy said that the ‘Rakan Muda’ programme, for example, needed a rebranding and a review of its content to draw the participation of non-Malay youths.

He also said that the ministry would emphasise unity through sports to get the people of all races to participate in all sports events.

“We want to find a formula to foster unity through sports because we see today that sports remains a divisive factor because sepak takraw draws the participation of the Malays and basketball, the Chinese, and so on. This does not foster unity among us.

“We will think of an approach that can overcome this,” he said.
