KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1- Immediate action must be taken by the authorities in fighting serious crime in order to bring back public peace and confidence, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said it was up to the police to ask from the government what they require, and the government would give them what was needed to raise the effectiveness of the force in fighting serious crime.

“We cannot allow this situation with regard to serious crime to persist. Immediate action must be taken by the authorities to bring back public peace and confidence,” he said in his latest Facebook post yesterday.

NEWSIn an immediate reaction, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) today conceded that sophisticated assets such as the ones owned by other developing countries were most needed to prevent all types of crime.

Assistant Head of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications), ACP Ramli Mohamed Yusoof said that in addition, attention must also be given to additional manpower as the task of preventing crime largely depended on the physical strength of a particular security force.

“I’m certain that if these two areas (modern assets and increased manpower) are given attention by the government, the task of crime prevention can be carried out in a better manner and the crime index, especially serious crime can be reduced,” he told Bernama.

He was commenting on the statement by the Prime Minister that immediate action must be taken by the authorities in fighting serious crime to bring back public order and confidence.

In his social website, Facebook, the Prime Minister said it was up to the police to ask the government to provide whatever they needed and the government would provide whatever was necessary to enhance the effectiveness of the force in battling serious crime.

Ramli said the PDRM needed modern assets like the ones possessed by the developing countries in Europe so that swift action could be taken to tackle criminals who were becoming bolder now to commit murder using firearms.

“At the moment, we cannot be behind and only adopted the conventional method in fighting crime. What if the criminals have sophisticated assets such as firearms while we (police) don’t have all those sophisticated weapons?” he said.
