KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3- Minister in the Prime Minister Department, Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, has congratulated Datuk Abdul Farid Alias on his appointment as Maybank’s new Chief Executive Officer.

Abdul Wahid, predecessor of Abdul Farid, said the new CEO was one of the key leaders in Maybank that helped transform it to become Malaysia’s most valuable company listed on Bursa Malaysia and a leading regional banking group.

“As Maybank is a national flag bearer, I’m sure Malaysians will continue to support it to be even more successful both domestically and internationally,” he told Bernama via a short messaging service today.

Abdul Farid succeeded Abdul Wahid, who resigned on June 4, to take over as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit.

Prior to the appointment, he was the bank’s deputy president and head of global wholesale banking.

Meanwhile, SME Bank Managing Director, Datuk Mohd Razif Mohd Yunus, said Abdul Farid’s appointment would provide a continuity for what has been done by Abdul Wahid.

“He has a good background in banking. He’s with the bank for more than six years and has headed the global wholesale banking, which is instrumental in Maybank’s expansion overseas.

“He also has the experience of turning around the bank in Indonesia and this will make the appointment a good one for Maybank,” he said.

Maybank is the country’s largest bank and is ranked among the top 100 banks in the world.
