SHAH ALAM, Aug 27- Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim proposed that the history of the country’s independence be reviewed and rewritten due to what he claimed were some unclear facts.
He said the rewriting should be viewed from the true picture of the independence events as there were differences of opinion about it among historians and academics.
“History is something that has happened based on facts … but how historians look at the causes of events differs at times.
“It is this difference that has to be clarified. For example, the basis for the country’s independence began from the resistance to the Malayan Union in 1946. However, some people say the basis of independence began when the British gave independence to their colonies in Africa and extended this to their other colonies,” he said.
Abdul Khalid spoke to reporters after attending the monthly assembly of Selangor government departments and launching the state-level ‘Fly the Malaysian Flag’ campaign at the State Secretariat Complex.
He said the rewriting of history had to be done with full responsibility so that it could serve as a reference for all, including schools.
