GEORGE TOWN, Sept 3- Penang Umno Liaison Committee secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir will contest a post in the party’s supreme council in the elections scheduled for next month, committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said yesterday.
He said the state Umno would give its full backing to Musa.
“So far, only Datuk Musa has offered himself for contest to represent the voice of the people of Penang and we will give him our full support.
“I hope other states will also give him their support as he has been outspoken in championing the plight of the Malays in Penang,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the committee, here.
Also present were Penang Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya, who is deputy health minister, and Musa.
Musa, who is also Bukit Mertajam Umno Division head, said he was contesting a supreme council post to strengthen Umno in Penang.
He said he made the decision after getting feedback and the support of the Umno members who wanted him to contest to champion the rights of the Muslims and Malays.
“The primary objective is to champion the rights of the Muslims and Malays, especially the people of Penang who are now increasingly marginalised,” said Musa, who is also defending the post of divisional chief.
Zainal Abidin said he and his deputy, Dr Hilmi, would not contest any post in the supreme council as they wanted to focus on strengthening the party at state level.
He said more new faces from among Umno Youth and Puteri Umno would be fielded to contest posts in the two wings.
“They have been identified, and they are the second echelon leaders who will be fielded to gain experience,” he added.
