KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10- Wanita Umno information head Datuk Hamidah Osman has suggested that former Puteri Umno head Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said contest for the post of Wanita Umno vice-head in the party election.
She said this was because Azalina was seen as ‘too alien’ to the wing besides the fact that she had never been in the Wanita Umno movement all this while.
“I don’t think she (Azalina) understands the Wanita movement and the Wanita operations. That’s why I suggest that she should go for the post of vice-head, so that she will be in the organisation and understands how the organisation (Wanita Umno) works.
“This is dealing with human factor… it means that in mobilising the party there are instances where you must be soft, there are instances where you must be firm.
“I totally agree that we need the young ones to come in, but those young ones wishing to come in must understand the organisation.
“She cannot immediately go for the number one post. What will happen if the captain of the ship does not know the engine components?” she said when met by Bernama, here.
Hamidah said the leadership of the incumbent Wanita head, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was still needed because of her success in bringing change and her caring touch that had succeeded to unite the Wanita Umno members.
“I feel that she (Shahrizat) should again be given a chance so that she can continue with the changes and progress made by the past leadership. She had succeeded in terms of solidarity,” she said.
Hamidah said Wanita Umno played an important role in the 13th general election to the extent that Umno seats in Parliament had increased from 79 to 88.
This success was due to the role played by Wanita through the system of work that was orderly under Shahrizat’s leadership, said the Gopeng Wanita Umno head.
“In order to ensure victory for the party, Shahrizat had come out with programmes such as the ‘Jalinan Rakyat’, ‘Skuad Sayang’ and ‘Salam Sayang’ which had all been successful,” she said.
Hamidah, who is also chairman of the Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga (Tekun Nasional), said: “If you get the wrong people to lead, then we will have a big problem in the next general election.”
