KUCHING, Sept 10- Sarawak is all set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malaysia Day on Monday.
A mammoth rally and parade will be held that day at Padang Merdeka, with the participation of 92 contingents involving 4,000 people.
About 20,000 people are expected to gather at the field to watch the rally and parade.
On the eve of Malaysia Day, a procession of decorated boats will be held along the Kuching Waterfront.
The celebration will be most meaningful for the people of Sarawak who exemplify a people of various communities living in peace, said Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
Ahmad Shabery, who is chairman of the celebrations marking the 56th anniversary of Merdeka and 50th anniversary of Malaysia Day, expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the grand occasion.
“I am satisfied with the preparations, much of which was done by the Sarawak government. We (the federal government) only did the streamlining,” he said after calling on Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at his residence in Demak Jaya, here.
Also present was the deputy secretary-general of the ministry, Datuk Dr Rothiah Omar.
Ahmad Shabery expressed his thanks to the state government which he said had contributed a lot to ensure the success of the celebrations, aimed at reminding the people of the significance of the formation of Malaysia through the merger of Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula.
