KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21- The nomination process for the Umno election 2013 throughout the country opened at 8am Saturday.
The nomination process for all posts including the three wings at the central level was held at the Umno headquarters here while the divisional level including for the three wings was held at the respective state Umno Liaison offices.
The process was scheduled to end at 5pm.
This was the first time that Umno was implementing the new method of election which was more transparent and democratic following the amendment to the party’s constitution in 2009.
After the conclusion of the nomination process, there would be a cooling off period of 72 hours or three days to enable the Election Committee to study the eligibility of the candidates wishing to contest before the list of candidates was announced.
The new election process also simplified the condition for the contest which only required the candidate to be an Umno member for three years and a member of the divisional committee or Supreme Council (MT) for one term to contest for a seat in the MT.
For the contest at the divisional level, they only needed to be an Umno member for at least three years.
This differed from the quota requirement implemented previously before anyone could contest for the MT seat.
The new election process empowered more members totalling 146,500 delegates from the 191 divisions which, among others, aimed to eliminate money politics.
The election for committee members for all the three wings at the divisional and central levels would be held on Oct 12 while the divisional and MT elections would be on Oct 19.
The Umno General Assembly 2013 would be held here from Dec 2 to 7.
