Kuala Lumpur, Nov 7 – MIC deputy youth chief V.Mugilan today announced his intention to contest the party Youth chief post at the MIC Youth election slated for Nov 16.

“I have decided to contest to help the leadership to strengthen and unite the party. I will continue with my work (which) I had undertaken since I became the deputy youth chief in 2009,” he told Bernama in an exclusive interview here Thursday.

The 38-year-old businessman will be challenged by MIC Youth secretary general C.Sivarajah, who also had announced his intention last Tuesday.

Nominations for the party’s Youth and Wanita wings will be held tomorrow.

“It is my duty to serve the people and resolve woes as well as the needs of the Indian community.

“I have a real passion for community service and hope to be able to utilise this skill and my experience to work for the betterment of the Indian community as a whole,” he said.

Speaking on his mission and vision, Mugilan said the youth needed a capable and powerful leader to identify and develop Indian youths’ capabilities and leadership quality, so that they would be able to exchange ideas for the betterment of MIC and Barisan Nasional.

Mugilan had worked his way up in the party through the rank and file, and enjoyed good grassroots support in the Youth wing.

Being an outspoken leader, Mugilan became popular when he together with two central working committee (CWC) members were sacked in 2010 after criticising then MIC supremo Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu, and later formed Gerakan Anti-Samy Vellu, better known as GAS.

Later, GAS was disbanded after president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel took over MIC in January, and on April 23, Palanivel decided to reinstate Mugilan.

For the deputy youth leader’s post, Melaka state deputy youth leader and lawyer Sashi Kumar Kannan had announced his decision to contest for the post. Sashi will be challenged by R.Thinalan, MIC Youth legal bureau head.
