Mumbai, Nov 19 – A health expert says India is fast becoming the global capital of diabetes and coronary heart disease due to rising habit of smoking, a sedentary lifestyle and obesity, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Namita Jain said stress, high-blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and increasing age and family history are other factors that contribute to increasing heart ailments and lifestyle diseases in the country.
The wellness expert said on the occasion of World Diabetes Day here recently that several studies have revealed health hazards faced by the stress-ridden Indian society.
Namita said some 200 million people around the world are likely to suffer from diabetes with the number doubling in the coming years according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
“There are nearly 50 million diabetics in India,” she said.
The World Congress of Cardiology estimates heart diseases will contribute to more than 40 per cent deaths in India by 2020 compared to 24 per cent in 1990.
