“We will amend the party’s constitution to bring back party elections at the state level to ensure democracy prevails within the party. If there is no democracy, the party cannot sustain( itself). We must give importance to the future of the party,” he said when winding up debate on the president’s address at the 67th MIC annual general meeting here today.

The MIC had conducted elections for all its state leadership in the 1980s.

Palanivel, who is also Natural Resources and Environment Minister said he also intended to see more new members recruited into the party fold rather than creating new branches.

Commenting on the election for the three vice-president posts and 23 Central Working Committee members, Palanivel said all losers and winners should set aside their differences and work towards the betterment of the party.

Besides the election going smoothly, he said delegates who attended the AGM today gave valuable inputs through their resolutions which were later adopted at the AGM.

The two-day AGM wrapped up today with Palanivel advising leaders to change the perception of MIC being a ‘puppet party’ in order to gain the trust and respect of the Indian community.

“MIC is not one man’s party. It is everyone’s party,” he said.
