Melaka, Dec 2 – The debate segment on the MIC president’s policy speech at the party’s 67th Annual General Meeting lacked the bite of past years.
The focus was more on the tussle for the three vice president posts and 23 central working committee seats, the former being so competitive, it prompted a delay of the results, which was only announced early yesterday after a few vote recounts.
Sadly too, the hall which was filled to the brim by delegates in the morning for the launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was almost half empty during the afternoon session.
As usual, the debate centred on Tamil schools, with delegates calling for facilities and development on par with government-run schools and Chinese vernacular schools.
The delegates welcomed the proposal by MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel to ask the government to draw up a ‘Re development Plan for the Indian Community’ in the country to improve their socio economic status.
Some delegates called for senior party leaders who had been elected for the 2013-2016 term, to contemplate on their role and responsibility in fulfilling the hopes and needs of the community.
A delegate from Johor, claiming that money politics had reared its ugly at the party election this year condemned it as being unpropitious for MIC’s democratic stance.
He also said MIC must prove that the party was still relevant particularly to the young generation, and continue its struggle in the interest of the Indian community.
