New Dehli, December 6- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh responded to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s December 3 statement warning Kashmir could trigger a possible fourth war with India. “Pakistan,” he told reporters at the navy chief’s residence on December 4, “cannot win a war against India in my lifetime.”
It was a remarkable statement from a Prime Minister who has braved criticism and cynicism to relentlessly pursue peace with Pakistan for nearly a decade. Speaking to the Left parties on the India-Pakistan joint mechanism to counter terror on September 23, 2006, the PM had ruled out war as an option.
On the first anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks which also demolished the joint mechanism, he struck a conciliatory note instead of threatening war. Five years after the 26/11 attacks, peace remains an option for him.
