Mandela Film Breaks Records In South Africa

Johannesburg, Jan 8 – Nelson Mandela based movie ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ has become the highest grossing film in the history of South African movies, Xinhua news agency reported.

Released on Nov 28 last year, the film has raked in 20,643,236 Rand (US$1.94 million) in some five weeks.

“This is a film for all South Africans and we are thrilled that South African audiences have watched this epic film on the big screen at cinemas,” said produder Anant Singh on Tuesday.

Long Walk to Freedom was adapted from the autobiography of the same name written by South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela.

It has beaten records of other multiple Oscar-winning biopics such as The King’s Speech, The Iron Lady and Lincoln and the highest earning film in the country, The Life of Pi which has made R20,567,285 (US$1.93 million) so far.

Long Walk of Freedom was produced by the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, the National Empowerment Fund and Videovision Entertainment production in association with Distant Horizon, Origin Pictures and Pathe.
