BUTTERWORTH, Feb 13 – The Penang Customs Department detained a man and seized 4.1kg syabu worth RM820,000 at the Penang International Airport (PIA) here, Monday.
Penang customs director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the 29-year old man was arrested by the Passenger Inspection Special Unit (UKPP) as soon as he arrived at the PIA from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 11.30pm, after his scanned luggage scan showed something that aroused suspicion.
“After further inspection of the man’s luggage, we found a pack of crystalline powder, believed to be syabu, hidden in a special compartment of the modified luggage,” he told reporters here today. Initial investigations revealed that the man took a flight from Brunei and transited at the KLIA before coming to Penang.
“We have yet to determined whether the man was a drug mule because investigations are being carried out. Records showed that it was the man’s first overseas flight,” he said.
Zulkifli said the man was now being remanded to help investigations under Section 39B of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
