Petaling Jaya, Jan 27- Speculation and talk of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim taking over from Khalid Ibrahim as the Selangor menteri besar has evoked mixed reaction from political analysts.
Responding to the Star’s report that Khalid agreed to step down from his post and that Anwar is set to fill the hot seat, political analyst Aruna Gopinath said that Anwar had all the qualities to lead the Selangor state government.
“Anwar will be able to work together with the federal government and with all the political experience under his belt, would be able to overcome defects in the current Selangor state leadership,” Aruna told FMT today.
“I believe he is the best person to replace Khalid. He will be able to work together with Umno.
“His knowledge in economics and socio-economy will also benefit the citizens of Selangor,” she said.
Meanwhile political analyst Lim Teck Ghee said he thought it is “extremely unlikely for Anwar to become the Selangor menteri besar”.
Questioning the credibility of the Star report, Lim said,“It is mere rumour and political gossip.”
“Mainstream media is trying to undermine Pakatan’s leadership.
“Anwar will never be the Selangor MB and I do not underestimate Khalid’s leadership.
“If Anwar becomes the Selangor MB it will be a wrong move by him,” added Lim.
Political analyst James Chin also said that it was not possible for Anwar to become the Selangor menteri besar.
“Only way Anwar will become the MB is if Khalid commits a major offence and that also will be temporary,” said Chin.
