NEW YORK, Feb 16 – United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the General Assembly and UN food agencies jointly announced steps to improve food worldwide as part of the efforts to build a future free of hunger, Algeria’s Press Service (APS) reported.
“Governments, the UN system, civil society, the private sector: each has an important role to play if we are to strengthen agriculture and banish malnutrition,” said George Talbot, the Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Economic and Financial Issues, co-organiser of the event.
One in eight people worldwide suffer chronic malnutrition, with volatile food prices, inadequate investment, land degradation and climate change making the situation more precarious, he said.
President of ECOSOC Nestor Osorio urged participants to build on the momentum created at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), in Brazil last summer.
