He said with the crisis coming to a close, all parties should learn a lesson from the episode which was a reminder that the prime minister could act decisively if the situation warranted.

Idris, who was former Terengganu menteri besar from 2004 to 2008 before he was succeeded by Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, said there was no undue haste in changing the menteri besar as Ahmad was to make good on an undertaking to step
down as he was to hold the reins for only one year.

“There are things that the prime minister can be flexible. In this case, when the grace period is over, he (Najib) has to act. Firmness is the hallmark of leadership.

“If the prime minister is not firm, a lot of things can happen,” Idris told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the 18th Malaysian Education Summit 2014) here today.

Terengganu was thrown into a political quagmire when Ahmad quit Umno after his successor, Ahmad Razif, who is also Seberang Takir assemblyman, took the oath of office before the Sultan Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin on
Monday.

Ahmad’s decision prompted two more Umno assemblymen, namely Ghazali Taib (Ajil) and Roslee Daud (Bukit Besi), to follow suit.

The trio declared themselves Independents, but they had since retracted their resignation letters, thus preserving the Terengganu State Assembly’s status quo.
