PUTRAJAYA, May 21 – The by-elections in Bukit Gelugor and Teluk Intan will be the polling venue for DAP to see the extent of public acceptance on the proposal to implement hudud by its ally PAS.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said if DAP were to win, it would clearly show that the people rejected hudud.
“It is an ideological collision which PAS has to bear and reflect its unprincipled attitude to implement hudud,” he told reporters here, Tuesday.
Ahmad Shabery, who is also Umno Supreme Council member, said this when asked to comment on the latest situation in the by-elections in Bukit Gelugor and Teluk Intan.
The situation also clearly demonstrated that the PAS struggle for hudud had nothing to do with Islam but more towards its political struggle.
The Bukit Gelugor by-election would see a four-corner fight between DAP candidate, Ramkarpal Singh, Datuk Huan Cheng Guan from Parti Cinta Malaysia and two independents, Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan.
Meanwhile, the Teluk Intan by-election was a fight between Barisan Nasional’s candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong and DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud.
Ahmad Shabery said the people in the respective constituencies must think of their own interests first before selecting a leader.
“These are not the general election but by-elections to pick their representatives, surely the most important matter is who can work,” he said.
He clarified that voters must be pragmatic and look for a leader who could cooperate with the State and federal governments.
