Kuala Lumpur, June 30 – A strong earthquake, measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale, struck the South Sandwich Islands at 3.53 pm Sunday, according to the Meteorological Department of Malaysia.
It said in a statement that the epicentre of the quake was 3,540 km southeast of Puerto Montt, Chile, and 12,626 southwest of Pontian, Johor.
The quake did not result in any threat of a tsunami, it added.
