htc_desire_616_dual_sim_whiteSingapore, July 9 – HTC has announced the Desire 616 smartphone in Singapore for $240, which converts to approximately RM613. The smartphone features a 1.4GHz octa-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and has a 5-inch 720p display. It’s also a dual-SIM phone, which also indicates that HTC has designed it for emerging markets. HTC is widely expected to launch the phone in India later this week.

Other than its ARM Cortex A7 octa-core architecture, the phone has a 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. Obviously, this phone is different from most HTC offerings as it leverages a cheaper chipset. Probably, it’s using a True-Octa chipset from MediaTek.

Other features of the phone include a 2,000mAh battery, 4GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot. There is no clarity over the version of Android it will run.

Design wise, it remains true to HTC’s industrial design, though unlike its high-end smartphones like the newly launched One (M8) it uses a plastic chassis instead of a premium metal finish.

The mid-range of the smartphone market has already seen an influx of high quality products from tier one OEMs like Motorola, Asus, Nokia, and Lenovo and HTC’s Desire 616 will surely make the cut if it’s priced correctly.
