TELUK INTAN, July 20 — “Firdaus is a good nephew, soft spoken and adept at Quran recital”. That was Rohani Che Embi’s description of the traits and personality of Muhamad Firdaus Abdul Rahim, 27, co-pilot of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 that crashed in Ukraine.
Rohani, 70, who was still in shock and saddened over the tragedy that had befallen her nephew, received the news from Muhamad Firdaus’ elder sister, Rozaireen, who had called her. However, Rohani who was met at her house here, had accepted the incident calmly as God’s will.
“I have taken care of Firdaus and his siblings since they were young as their parents were working then, she said, adding that she did not expect her conversation with Muhamad Firdaus a few days before he left for Amsterdam would be their last.
Rohani said her nephew, whom she last saw prior to the fasting month, would always request her to prepare ‘teh tarik’ his favourite drink whenever he came back to visit her.
He had nurtured an interest in aviation since from a young age, a passion he shared with several relatives who were involved in the industry, she said. She said Muhamad Firdaus, who was the youngest among five siblings, would have celebrated his 27th birthday this Monday.
