NEW DELHI, Aug 27 – A journalist have given the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a completely new meaning in India by twisting it to Rice Bucket Challenge, whereby instead of dumping oneself with cold water, you give a bucket of rice to the needy.
The idea by Manju Latha Kalanidhi’s from Hyderabad is getting good response as her message have gone viral on social media. The Facebook page of Rice Bucket Challenge had so far gained more than 20,000 likes.
Description of the page is, “India’s Version for Indian Needs.” It says, “Let’s Challenge our friends to take up the #RiceBucketChallenge.” Take a picture or video of your challenge and tag a friend.”
“I like this idea better than the ALS. Keep it up. All the way from South Africa,” a Facebook user with the name Sanele Mngoma wrote on the page. “Most easy, affordable scheme for the needy. Let’s all engage in the noble cause,” posted another user, Shafee Ahmed from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
According to 2011-13 Global Hunger Index (GHI) about a quarter of the world’s hungry, or 210 million, are in India alone. India still continues in the “Alarming” category of countries classified by severity of hunger. Others in this category are Ethiopia, Sudan, Congo, Chad, Niger, and other African countries, says the GNI report.
