NEW DELHI, Dec 18 – India has banned the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organisation and is monitoring cyberspace to prevent the group from spreading propaganda, Xinhua news agency reported.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said at parliament on Tuesday that he had instructed a committee be set up to monitor cyberspace following the ban on IS. Singh was responding to a question on steps undertaken by the government to prevent the spread of IS.
The minister said there are a “handful” or “negligible” number of people involved in IS activities in India. Police arrested an IT engineer last weekend in southern city of Bangalore for spreading IS propaganda via Twitter. An Indian youth who joined IS in Iraq was arrested two weeks ago after returning to Mumbai.
