whatsapp-doble-checkNew Delhi, January 7 – WhatsApp has been growing at a breakneck pace. Back in August, the Facebook owned messaging service announced that it has crossed 600 million monthly active users.

Now, the company has announced that it has crossed 700 million monthly active users. Importantly, the company has added 100 million users in just 4 months, which is staggering.

“I hope you all had a happy and peaceful holiday season. Today, we’re thrilled to share that WhatsApp has more than 700 million monthly active users,” said Jan Koum, WhatsApp CEO in a Facebook post. “Additionally, every day our users now send over 30 billion messages,” he added.

This also means that WhatsApp is pulling away from its rivals at a blistering pace. WeChat, which is highly popular in China has a 468 million monthly active users, while Line has 170 million monthly active users.

In fact, WhatsApp is bigger than Twitter and Instagram combined. Twitter has 284 million users, while Instagram has a 300 million users. For India no numbers were revealed.

As of November, WhatsApp has 70 billion monthly active users in India. Last year, Facebook had acquired WhatsApp for $22 billion. To date, the service is not making any money and lost $230 million.

In the future, WhatsApp is expected to add a voice calling feature. Leaked screenshots point towards an imminent launch. It is rumoured to be working on a “call via skype” and driving mode as well.
