galaxy-s6South Korea, February 7 – At MWC next month in Barcelona, South Korean tech giant, Samsung, is expected to unveil the Galaxy S6 smartphone. The company has already sent out invites for the phone and is teasing a ‘curved screen’ variant dubbed the ‘Edge’ in the invite.

Officially, no one knows what Samsung is planning, but its partners have reportedly spilled the beans and leaked the phone. Verus, a casemaker based out of South Korea has leaked images of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Edge.

Going by the leaked photos, we can say that the Galaxy S6 remains true to the Galaxy S design language, but perhaps this time around is using sturdier materials like metal in its construction.

The Galaxy Edge, however, is a different animal. Based on the leaked case, we get a glimpse of a phone, which is not only curved from its sides, but also from the vertical top. This in fact corroborates the tease Samsung offered in its press invite for its MWC event.

Previously, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note Edge, which features a curved side. Clearly, Samsung is upping the ante. Apart from the leaked photos of the device, rumours suggest that phone will have a quad-HD display (There’s no consensus on the size of the screen), and will be powered by Exynos 7420 octa-core 64-bit CPU built on Samsung’s new 14-nanometre fabrication process.

In addition, it is expected to have a 20-megapixel rear camera with optical image stablisation. You can also expect a device running Android 5.0 Lollipop with a new version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.

samsung-galaxy-s6-note-edgeRecent reports have suggested that Samsung dropped Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 CPU from the Galaxy S6 over heat dissipation issues. It is also believed that Samsung had great faith in its own new Exynos CPU.

This has been even highlighted in Qualcomm’s earnings report, where it admitted a major phone had dropped its CPU, and it had to rejig its earnings forecast. Samsung is also believed to be using a new fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S6, which works similar to the iPhone 6.

Also, the company has reportedly toned down the extra software functionality of its TouchWiz user interface from the phone. These features will be offered as an optional download.

In the meanwhile, stay tuned on March 1, when Samsung hosts its press conference at MWC. Apart from Samsung, HTC is also expected to have a major smartphone launch at MWC.
