Palanivel stirs another controversy – Appoints Sothi as Sec Gen

Kuala Lumpur, February 9 – Within hours of the announcement by Home Minister Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MIC President Datuk Seri G.Palanivel stirred another controversy by appointing Datuk S.Sothinathan as the new Secretary-General of the party.

G-Palanivel1-200813_840_604_100Although the Home Minister clearly spelled in his statement that it will be the 2009 CWC that will be in charge of MIC now, the President made another U-turn by appointing Sothinathan as the new Secretary General and has put the RoS in an embarrassing situation to make another decision – whether Sothi’s appointment as Secretary General is valid!

In a press statement G.Palanivel stated as follows:

“The Home Minister has today announced in the press conference that MIC fresh elections for all levels to be held beginning April 2015 until July 2015. The Home Minister’s press conference is a re-iteration of the contents of the letter dated 6 February 2015 issued by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) relating to the fresh elections.

RoS has also directed that the members of the Central Working Committee elected in 2009 shall form the Interim Central Working Committee for the purposes of the fresh elections. Though the directive of RoS as such is not provided for in the Societies Act, 1966 or the MIC Constitution, MIC will carry out the fresh elections as amicable resolution reached to resolve the issues with the RoS.

In this regard, the members of the Central Working Committee elected in 2009 who will form part of the Interim Central Working Committee are as follows:

The President also stated in his statement: “During the elections in 2009, there were no Putera or Puteri wings in existence, which were only created after the amendments to the Constitution made in September 2009. Thus, there will not be any representatives from these wings in the Interim Central Working Committee.”

“Under Article 60.3 of the MIC Constitution, I have the powers to superintend the administration of MIC in compliance to the MIC Constitution. I will accordingly call for the meeting of the Interim Central Working Committee to take all the necessary steps to hold the fresh elections.”
