Kuala Lumpur, Dec 18 – A 10 per cent discount on the monthly electricity bill would be given to houses of worship that had registered with the federal and state government, the Dewan Negara was told Tuesday.

Energy, Technology and Water deputy minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said unregistered houses of worship would not be given the special discount as they were considered commercial premises.

“The government hopes these religious premises would practise prudence in their electricity usage and be an example to the people,” he said in reply to Senator Firdaus Abdullah while winding up the Supply Bill 2014.

Meanwhile, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government deputy minister Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique said 1,251 companies and 4,090 members of boards of director had been blacklisted as at May 31 this year, for various failures relating to housing projects in the country.

One hundred and eighteen companies were blacklisted for abandoned projects and 250 for sick projects.

“Company names could be changed but directors who have been blacklisted will not be given another opportunity to be in the industry,” she said in reply to Senator Datuk Noriah Mahat.
