China names Li keqiang as premier

BEIJING, March 15 – The 12th National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s parliament, named Li Keqiang as the Chinese premier Friday.  Li will succeed former Premier Wen Jiabao to hold the number two position in the country for a five-year term, but is expected to be in power for a decade like his predecessor.

Li Keqiang (left), the new premier of China, shakes hands with the outgoing officeholder, Wen JiabaoYesterday, Xi Jinping was elected as the Chinese president by the country’s  top legislature to succeed former president Hu Jintao.  Xi was named as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission (CMC) at the 18th Communist CPC National Congress on Nov 8 last year.  The first annual session of the 12th NPC, which is scheduled from March 3 to 17, will name the vice-premiers and state councillors on Saturday.
