LAHAD DATU: Certain areas within the Eastern Sabah Security  Zone (ESSZone) which have had no kidnappings may be excluded from the curfew in the future.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said the matter was still under the proposal stage, and would be put forward based on the findings of a review of the curfew.

Speaking to reporters after the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) meeting chaired by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Mazlan Mansor here today, Omar said, however, the timings for the curfew would be maintained from 6 pm to 6 am.

The daily 12-hour curfew now covers waters off Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Semporna, and Tawau.

The curfew was first enforced on July 16, 2014, to curb  kidnappings and cross-border crime including threats from the Abu Sayyaf militant group.
