BANGKOK, June 4 – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has called on the mass media to be professional and to balance between press freedom and responsibility.
Yingluck made the call in Bangkok on Tuesday morning during her speech in the World Newspaper Congress, the World Editors Forum and the World Advertising Forum, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.
She acknowledged that the mass media play important roles in distributing information, knowledge and news, hence, their freedom and responsibility will give correct and adequate information to people, which become keys to mutual understanding.
Yingluck suggested that the mass media prioritise public interest, order, individuals’ rights and national security, be professional and balance between press freedom and responsibility, warning that without ethical responsibility, the mass media could create public confusion, misunderstanding and unrest.
According to the Thai prime minister, technological developments have opened new frontiers for the mass media in the cyberspace, the abuse of the technologies will, thus, cause damage that is difficult to undo and the mass media should be cautious about it.
