KUALA LUMPUR, July 27- Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim will make a two-day visit to Cambodia from Saturday to observe its fifth general election, which will be held this Sunday.
His visit is under the invitation of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), a forum of political parties that aims to promote understanding and cooperation amongst political parties in the region.
He will be leading a nine-member delegation, including officials from the Malaysian Election Commission and media representatives.
Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) recently announced that 9.67 million voters were eligible to cast their votes this Sunday to elect representatives for the country’s 123-seat National Assembly.
The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) led by Prime Minister Hun Sen has retained power since 1998.
In the 2008 general election, CPP secured a huge victory by winning 90 seats, while the opposition party, the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), won 29 seats.
