Weiskirchen (Germany) – There’s a lot of choice for tourists these days to pick where they want to stay: hotels, hostels, farms, tents or even on boats. A new option for holidaymakers in a German wine-growing region is to sample the local wines, then bed down in a barrel.
At the Weiskirchen Climate Resort, each accommodation unit consists of two out-sized barrels: one on its side to sleep in and one stood on end, which is the bathroom, says Petra Paul, the health resort’s owner.

Guests needn’t worry about a lingering smell of red or white wine, unless they’ve had a few too many glasses themselves, as the casks are specially made for accommodation and have not been used to mature the drinks.
“They were made to be a bit longer than the traditional barrels,” says Paul. Wine is served plentifully at the resort in the Saar valley.
