A good night’s sleep is important not only for the mind, but also for the back, orthopaedic specialists say.
The discs in the spine, the vertebrae and the muscles all recover during sleep.
But for this it is important to alternate between sleeping on the back and on the side, explains orthopaedic specialist Reinhard Schneiderhan.
When sleeping on the back, the spine is s-shaped, while it is straight when sleeping on the side.
By contrast, sleeping face down results in pressure on joints and muscles and should be avoided.
