The airstrike of more than 50 tomahawk missiles comes in response to a chemical weapons attack on Tuesday that killed more than 80 people.
The missiles were launched by two US vessels in the western Mediterranean Sea, the Pentagon said, according to news reports.
The target was an airbase in western Syria that the US says was used by planes that carried the bombs that dropped chemical weapons on Khan Sheikhoun.
