KUALA LUMPUR – The Home Ministry today dismissed a claim that 300,000 Malaysian Indians did not have identification documents as was highlighted prior to the 14th General Election.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman (pic) said only 3,853 applications for citizenship were received from Indians up to May 30 this year.
“Of the total, 1,638 applications have been resolved while 2,215 were being processed,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk T. Mohan (pic) in the Dewan Negara.
He said that prior to GE14, certain opposition MPs had highlighted the figure of 300,000.
“Of course, the figure is inaccurate. Today, I state in the Dewan Negara the actual number of the undocumented status of the Indian community in our country,” he said.
Mohan, in his original question, had wanted to know the actual number of Indians in Malaysia who did not have identification papers.
