KUALA LUMPUR — The charges brought against Datuk Seri Najib Razak showed that the authorities are desperate to fulfill the manifesto of the Government of the day (PH), says Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
He said the charges relating to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund were also not strong enough to punish his client as he had already returned 90 percent of the fund to the donor’s account he received it from.
“It clearly shows that the authorities are desperate by bringing up charges related to 1MDB so that they can fulfil their general election manifesto,” he told a press conference after Najib was charged in court here today.
He said Najib had returned the sum of USD651 million in June ,July and August 2013 after the 13th General Election that year because he had no more use of the money after the election was over.
Asked on the book called “Billion Dollar Whale” written by Tom Wright and Bradley Hope which claimed that Najib has been misled by wanted businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, the lawyer replied “If the book can be made as evidence, it will be very interesting enough”.
“The book says that most likely the businessmen Jho Low had in fact mislead the people, including Najib,” he said.
