SHAH ALAM – Johor Bahru Member of Parliament, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir (pic) has been elected as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth chief for the 2018-2021 term, announced at the Youth wing’s 13th National Congress, here, today.
Akmal, who replaces Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, defeated his closest challengers, the incumbent Youth deputy chief and Seberang Jaya assemblyman, Dr Afif Bahardin, and Kota Anggerik assemblyman, Mohd Najwan Halimi.
The announcement of the new PKR Youth leadership line-up was made by the party’s Central Election Committee (JPP) chairman, Datuk Rashid Din.
Nik Nazmi, 36, the Setiawangsa MP, did not seek re-election to the Youth top post this time due to the age factor in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Meanwhile, Muhamad Hilman Idham, the Gombak Setia assemblyman, had been voted in as PKR Youth deputy chief, replacing Afif.
Muhamad Hilman defeated Naqiuddin Nazrin and Sabah Pakatan Harapan Youth chief, Raymond Anuar.
In the seven-cornered contest for the three posts of vice-president, the victors were Jestin Raj Savarimuthu, Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus and Thiban Subbramaniam.
Also announced was the full list of the PKR Youth Central Executive Council.
However, the announcement of the election results was slightly marred by a commotion when Afif’s supporters protested against Akmal’s win and staging a walkout.
Akmal, in his speech later, acknowledged Afif and Mohd Najwan’s contributions to the wing, asking the delegates present to stand up and give the two a rousing applause.
Akmal also expressed hope that his election as PKR Youth head would be accepted by all with an open heart and to give their undivided support to the wing’s new leadership line-up.
“My main task as youth head is to ensure this wing continues to remain strong.
“We need to move on from the contests in the party elections as what is more important now is to move together as a team towards realising the party’s promises,” he said at a news conference after the announcement of the PKR Youth election results.
