KUALA LUMPUR — Federal Court Judge Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat (pic) has been appointed as the new Chief Justice, effective today.
The Prime Minister’s Office in a statement said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on the advice of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and after consulting with the Conference of Rulers consented to the appointment based on Clause 1, Article 122B of the Federal Constitution.
According to the statement, the date of the ceremony to present the instrument of appointment and swearing in before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong would be announced by the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court upon getting His Majesty’s consent.
The statement also informed that the tenure of Tan Sri Richard Malanjum as Chief Justice ended on April 12 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age (66 years and 6 months).
“Deepest thanks to him (Richard Malanjum) for his service in the time he was the Chief Justice,” the PMO said in the statement.
