PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy today stressed the importance of understanding each other’s religious sensitivity as the platform to racial harmony in the country.
Referring to a letter published in a local newspaper today entitled “Plea For Vegetarian Food”, he said the situation supported his call for a total religious understanding among Malaysians, especially when it comes to matters involving religious obligations such as being vegetarian.
“It is a known fact that each unique culture is influenced by religion. We cannot deny that religion shapes the way we live, hence appreciating each uniqueness would increase our understanding of each other and ultimately improve our sense of togetherness as a nation,” he said in a statement, here today.
The letter from ex-matriculation vegetarian student claimed that vegetarian students were prohibited from buying outside foods even after a formal request was made to the students affairs officers.
He said the management especially educational institutions should be more sensitive towards their students’ religious background moving forward.
Waytha Moorthy said he would be writing to the Education Ministry in true spirit of multicultural social fabric to seek their support and action in hopes to address and improve such grievances moving forward.
