SEGAMAT, April 18 – MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam is ready to fight Johor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chairman Datuk Chua Jui Ming all the way in Segamat. The incumbent for Segamat parliamentary seat since 2004 said Barisan Nasional (BN) had implemented various changes and development for people in the constituency.
“Anyone can contest here. We (BN) have been here for nine years and the people here know what we have done. Those who said we didn’t do anything are ungrateful,” he told reporters after visiting 46 Kampung Abdullah petty traders affected by last year’s flood.
Subramaniam who beat Pang Hok Liong (DAP) to win with 2,991 majority votes in 2008 general election has a good chance of retaining the seat despite the challenge from Chua. Segamat parliamentary constituency has 47,115 voters comprising 21,502 (45.64%) Chinese, 20,921 (44.4%) Malays and 4,692 (9.96%) Indians. Subramaniam said most of the voters met welcomed him to their areas.
“In 200 people, only one said he did not know and never met me, maybe because he is not local. But on the whole, we were well received,” he added.
