PUTRAJAYA, April 18 – MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam today reminded MIC leaders who were not picked as candidates for the 13th General Election (GE13) not to go the independent route but instead continue championing’ the people’s welfare.
“Everyone will lose. They will not win and might even lose their deposits apart from affecting the Barisan Nasional’s chances of winning.
“What is to be gained (by going the independent route)? The whole thing is very negative,” Subramaniam, who is also Human Resource Minister, told reporters after attending his ministry’s 2012 Excellence Awards presentation ceremony here today.
He was commenting on the stand taken by two MIC members to contest the Kapar and Kuala Selangor parliamentary seats as independents. They are S. Ganesan who has said he wanted to join the fray for the Kapar seat while Assam Jawa MIC head Redwan Abdullah wants to contest in Kuala Selangor.
He said rumours of leaders not picked as candidates threatening to contest as independents was quite normal but usually they did not do so when nomination day came. He also reminded them to heed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s advice not to sulk more than 24 hours and get back to support the BN and their comrades On the Segamat parliamentary seat where he will be up against Johor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chairman Datuk Chua Jui Meng, Subramaniam said he was confident of securing a victory for the BN.
The constituency make up is 45.64 Chinese of the 47,115 registered voters, Malays 44.4 per cent and Indians 9.96 per cent.
“In fact in the last election Chinese voters made up 47 per cent, but we (BN) won. Hardcore voters who support the opposition will support opposition but our supporters will continue to back us. It will definitely be tougher this time but we are ready,” he added.
