ECKOTA BAHARU, April 22- Candidates contesting in the general election usually go down on the ground to meet the people and give ceramah besides distributing their respective party posters, but Independent candidate Mohd Zakiman Abu Bakar, who is contesting two seats here, has chosen cyber space to meet the people.

Mohd Zakiman, 37, who is contesting the Kota Baharu parliamentary and Kota Lama state seats, said he would use the social media such as Facebook, Twitter and the blog to campaign during the general election.

“Using the social media can be effective if it is used correctly and in a more practical manner,” he told Bernama, here today.

Using the book for his logo on the ballot papers, Mohd Zakiman conceded that he was not a widely-known politician in his parliamentary constituency.

“I’m an entrepreneur in Shah Alam and occasionally return to Kota Baharu on business and family matters,” he said.

Mohd Zakiman, 37, who hails from Jalan Gajah Mati, here, said his decision to contest was to serve the people if he were to win the two seats although this would be quite impossible for him.

“I want to strengthen racial solidarity which had been affected due to differing political ideologies besides boosting the business climate here which I find to be gloomy lately,” he said.

Denying that he had been sponsored to stand in the parliamentary and state constituencies, he said his decision to contest was of his own free will as a result of the support he received from his family and friends. In the poll on May 5, the Kota Baharu parliamentary constituency will see a three-cornered fight between the Barisan Nasional candidate, Datuk Mohamad Fatmi Che Salleh, PAS candidate Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, and Mohd Zakiman.

In the Kota Lama state constituency, Mohd Zakiman will also face two other candidates, namely Tan Ken Ten (BN), and PAS candidate Datuk Anuar Tan Abdullah.
