Dewan Negara President Abu Zahar sworn in as senator for 2nd term

Abu ZaharKUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Negara President Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang was sworn in as a member of the Senate after being appointed for the second term.

He took his oath of office before the Dewan Negara Deputy President,Senator Doris Sophia Brodi at the Parliament Hall on Friday.

Abu Zahar, 69, who was the former president of the Former Elected Representatives Council (Mubarak) was reappointed a Senator effective Friday for a three-year term after his first term expired on Thursday.

He was appointed as the 16th President of the Dewan Negara on April 26, 2010, succeeding Datuk Wong Foon Meng whose term expired on April 12, 2010.

He began his career in 1964 as a Police Inspector and rose to become Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman before leaving the police force in 1979.

From 1980 to June 1986, Abu Zahar joined the legal profession in the federal capital before being elected as State Assemblyman for Pilah and becoming a Negri Sembilan State Exco member in charge of the Housing and Local Government portfolio.

In 1991, he defended the Pilah State Assembly seat before being elected as the Member of Parliament for Kuala Pilah for one term from 1995 until 1999.
