Datuk Lee Chee Leong.KAMPAR: Voters can be assured of their safety during the polling day despite the incidents of disturbances in several places in the country, says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong.

He said the police looked into the security aspect of each general election for any cases of violence.

“Some minor and petty things have occurred. But the police are taking extra precaution by intensifying security and they know what to do,” said Lee after a breakfast gathering with the Sikh community at the gurdwara in Kampar town here Wednesday.

“It is very safe (for voters). They can come out to vote. It is just like any normal day and there is nothing to worry about,” he said.

It was reported that all 112,000 police personnel nationwide have been deployed to help ensure a smooth and peaceful polling day.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said that his officers and men would also beef up their presence in “hot spots” that they have identified.

Recent incidents include a molotov cocktail being hurled at a Barisan Nasional operations centre in Ipoh and an explosion at a ceramah site in Nibong Tebal.

During the event, Lee mingled with the local Sikh community and thanked them for their support.

Bank officer Gurudev Singh, 50, said Kampar has seen many positive changes under Lee’s leadership as the emergence of Utar has boosted the town’s economy with the influx of students.

Teacher Hardave Singh, 47, said under Lee, the presence of police and Rela forces have improved in the constituency since he was the Deputy Home Minister.

“People feel more confident and safe now when they are in the area,” said the father of three.

Housewife Sathvindar Kaur said she hoped the Barisan government would be able to provide more job opportunities for Sikhs and women in Kampar.

“The women here would like for more career opportunities so that we can earn a living despite being at home,” said the mother of four.
